Beauceron: The Pride Of France

Tags: , , ,

2008-08-07France doesn't just boast romance, cuisines of elegance and other fancy commodities, but a dog breed of great versatility. What pooch could I possibly be talking about? If you haven't read the title, it's called the Beauceron, also known as the Bas Rouge (this means “Red Stocking” when translated into English).

This pooch is one of the big boys out there, weighing from 75 to 110 pounds, and standing as tall as 27 inches. They are pretty muscular as well, agile, and very strong – it's perceived by some people to resemble a Doberman, only bigger. The coat of this canine comes in a tri-color combinations, namely: black, grey, and tan.

It's hair is pretty short too, so grooming it won't be much of a problem. You now should be able to grasp an image of the Beauceron in mind, but why does France take pride in the pooch? Well aside from its macho build and Doberman-like looks, it's well-rounded. One of its talents include the ability to hunt – bears, boars, or whatever killer mammal that was thrown at it.

What the Beauceron used to its advantage was its good sense of smell (for tracking animals) superior muscular build (which gave it strength for chasing and even tackling), power (for pouncing on the prey), and intelligence (for obeying the commands of the hunter exactly when given). Aside from making a great hunting dog, they also were used during World War I and II to deliver messages from one point to another, detect land mines, and search for injured allies on the battlefield.

When the war ended, the “veteran” was drafted into police work. As we all know they had problems with drug and weapons smugglers (since when did they not?). Beaucerons were made to sniff out any of the illegal commodities and alert the boys of the police. Readers of this article (if any), would probably think that this is really cool dog and would likely want to own one (I would).

Good news, they make very good house pets as well. They are very energetic and extremely protective over its owner and family. The family it belongs to will be treated as its “herd”, meaning it'll feel the responsibility of taking care of each member and ensuring nothing bad happens to them.

A pooch of that character usually comes with a dominant attitude, which translates into it being hard-headed at times. You wouldn't want an animal pushing you around and making you look like a pussy. At an early age, make it know that you're in charge, not it - give it canine behavioral lessons to get rid of other potential problems that may develop.

Teaching it commands should be easy after that, but doesn't mean you shouldn't use the right dog training methods. The Beauceron breed will get along with the kids, but not other pets. They tend to play rough with other pooches in town, dealing with that means you're going to have to allow it to socialize as early as possible.

When not training it, you should give it time for casual walks and play. Bonding with it is essential if you wanna turn it into something a lot more friendly.
