Chesapeake Bay Retriever: Hunter And Pet

Tags: , , , ,

2008-07-08The Chesapeake Retriever is an outstanding hunter. It is physically strong and built tough – it has a double coat that allows it to brave harsh weather conditions, such as extreme cold. This is something that hunters find to be a very useful attribute when out on the field. Having a dog with a keen sense of smell and hearing is something that gives them a major advantage.

Stressful situations isn't much of a problem for this pooch; it is highly tolerant and can take on all sorts of challenges, which it accepts whole-heartedly. This breed can weigh from 60 to 90 pounds, and stand 21 to 26 inches from foot to shoulder. It's a little more than the average sized dogs, but packs a lot of power and stamina.

Because of it's athletic build it can move swiftly and turn fast, which makes it very responsive in fast-pace scenarios. The Chesapeake Retriever has qualities that many people would love to have in their pet. Aside from being a popular pick amongst hunters around the globe, it's also preferred by many as a house pet.

This pooch is very affectionate, it loves being around its human companions and playing. It is very protective and territorial, what belongs to it should belong to it only. Strangers are the type of people that it doesn't get along with very well. Expect that it would doubt the purity of their intentions, even that of your closest friends.

Can you see a potential problem here? Of course you do, and you would easily be able to conclude that early training of this pooch will be needed. If you plan on getting this breed of dog, get it while it's still young. Dogs with this kind of mentality usually develop behavioral problems such as being overprotective, slightly or very aggressive, and bossy.

Take note of any signs of bad behavior, and deal with it. Don't let it grow into something big – do so by letting it know that you don't like whatever bad thing it may be doing. These pups usually come with the superiority complex implanted in their minds. It'll try to show you who's boss, but any human with dignity wouldn't let that happen.

Step up and take charge, show it that you are the alpha dog and have zero tolerance for unruly behavior and bad habits. I'm not implying that you hit it, I'm saying that you should keep it in place – in a firm yet gentle manner. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is an intelligent pooch - it will learn tricks and commands faster than many other breeds.

Though smart, it may take time for it to learn something, especially if it still has behavioral problems. Catching the attention, making it focus on you and you alone would turn its mind into a sponge, waiting to absorb whatever you're going to teach it. Keep the training routines intense and interesting.

If it enjoys learning with you, it will look forward to the next session. This makes things easier for the both of you. You also have to make use of praises and rewards for behaving nicely and obeying commands. The Chesapeake Bay Retriever will need an owner to look up to and follow, someone that has the patience and perseverance to carry on with its daily training needs.

The results of educating this pooch will depend on how well you do the job. These are somethings you should keep in mind while training this breed.
