Surgery Is The Last Resort For Your Dog’s Pancreatitis

Tags: , , ,

2008-11-26Dog diseases can be treated either with proper medications or surgery. While there are those sicknesses that can be treated or administered by the owners themselves there are times when a need for a veterinarian arises. However for some extreme cases surgery might be the only way to save your pet’s life.

Take pancreatitis in dogs for instance. The pancreas plays an important role in the body such as producing insulin to regulate sugar levels and enzymes as the mechanism that helps in digestion. With the pancreas in bad condition, your dog’s health is in serious situation. Your pet cannot tell you when it is not feeling well so be alert and observant when you see that your dog is not acting normally.

Take note that pancreatitis attacks older dogs usually females. Watch out whenever your pet is having a moody behavior such that it seems friendly with other pets or persons then it becomes aggressive and fights with other pets. This might be the way your pet releases the pain it feels inside since it doesn’t know how to react.

Take note also of the following symptoms: your pet always raises its rear when it is in a sitting or laying position or arches its back when it trys to stand up. It also experiences fluctuating appetite where in it eats fine today, not eating anything the next day and then it suddenly becomes ravenous and eats as if it has been famished for days.

But the worst of all is when it stops eating for no reason at all. Other symptoms are diarrhea, pain in the abdomen, and fever. Maybe you would think that “how come my dog is sick when it fact I make sure that I give it the best foods I’ve got?”.

Then maybe you are wrong for that reason. What you think is the best for it might be not good for its health. If you love bacon, steaks, ham and other fatty foods and you really want to share it with your dog, stop and think again. Don’t even try give these kinds of food to your pet not even as a treat.

Fat rich foods are one of the causes for pancreatitis. Make its diet low in fat but rich in protein, vitamins and minerals. Other causes would be obesity, certain medications, toxins, kidney diseases and obstruction in the pancreatic duct. Once your dog is diagnose with pancreatitis have it check by a vet.

Treatments range from administering medicines to surgery. The initial treatment is to withdraw food and water for 24 hours. However if the pancreatic duct is block the only way to correct it is through surgery. That is why it would be best if the disease is diagnosed earlier on to prevent further complications.

Certain disease such as diabetes, kidney, liver and heart problems complicates the circumstances. If ever your dog needs surgery make sure that you and your pet are ready for it. This is a serious matter because your dog might not be able to make through it. But with proper medication and specialized diet your dog might be able to recover.

However, do not wait until your pet ends up in the operating room. Make measures whenever you can to prevent it from acquiring diseases.
