Why It's Called Saint Bernard

Tags: , , ,

2008-06-26Why did people name a dog after a Saint? Because this breed can really live up to it. In the past, it is said that this pooch was trained by monks to rescue travelers stranded or lost in the snowy mountains. They have the inclination towards good – they actually like helping out humans.

This breed has been known to save countless lives. The Saint Bernard is a very large dog, it can weigh anywhere from 110 to 200 pounds, and stand between 24 to 28 inches. They have beautiful short coats that are quite glossy – it has a “tough” feel to it. This is what protects it from the extreme cold.

This is a muscular and very strong dog. It are capable of pulling out stranded people in mountains with ease. Despite the dog's massive size, it has a soft and gentle nature inside. - it loves humans and gets along with children as well. If your planning of raising a Saint Bernard, special care needs to be given to this pet.

Even though they are very friendly, they still will need to undergo proper training and behavioral education as do all breeds. Acquiring it at the earliest time possible will be a great advantage for interested owners. Being gentle with it but firm helps it understand who's in charge. Not tolerating any bad behavioral habits is needed just as much as rewarding and praising obedience and good acts.

Keep the training sessions regular. Don't skip out on a scheduled routine; it's important that it gets used to regular “classes”. Owners of this breed don't have much difficulty with teaching it commands. It is a very intelligent dog, making learning tricks a walk in a park. Grooming the Saint Bernard isn't difficult because of its short hair.

It will just need daily brushing and baths when needed. Living in cold climate better suits this pet. If your living in a place that's quite warm, trimming its fur might help, but if not done properly can boggle its ability to regulate its temperature. Brushing its teeth can lower the odds of it getting sick.

Use a special toothbrush and toothpaste designed for doggies to kill the bacteria in its mouth. This pooch does have the tendency to drool, so you might wanna get a mop for that. Pay close attention to this pets diet. It's a heavy eater, overfeeding it can cause it to bloat.

Divide its meals equally into three instead of giving one big one. Make sure that it gets enough nutrition daily and is hydrated enough. This pooch will also need to exercise daily – take it out on daily walks or jogs. Allowing it to socialize with other pets and humans is needed for its behavioral development.

A Saint Bernard really lives up to its name. It is very gentle and loyal with its master, quite friendly with others, and a hero at heart. Playful, affectionate, and caring - always willing to help others out when needed. Bringing one home would be one of the best decisions you'd ever make.
