 Yet another large dog with a name that isn't well-known to many. The Cane Corso has been around for quite some time now – some like to refer to this dog breed as the Roman War Dog, mainly because it existed during Roman times and actually took part in the show business.
The show business during that time was an arena, where slaves and captive enemy soldiers from all over the world, were made to fight to the death. To make things more interesting they added the Cane Corso and other wild beasts such as the lion – these battles were hosted by the Emperor to offer or distract the people from focusing on the financial problems they were having, because of poor management or corrupt officials.
Going back to the topic, this pooch is really tough and brave – these attributes didn't go unnoticed. The farmers also wanted to make use of such desirable traits – they used the Cane Corso for watching over their livestock, or in other words, as a sheepdog. The problem of their animals getting devoured by countless savage beasts was solved with the aid of this courageous pet.
But that wasn't its only purpose; it was also big and physically strong. You'd think that pulling carts was only done by horses and asses (donkeys), right? 105 to 115 pounds of muscle plus bone and a little fat made it capable of towing cargo too, not as much as a horse or ass (donkey) maybe, but could still help out in someway.
A very effective work dog indeed, capable of taking on almost taking on any physical task entrusted to it. With so much potential you'd wonder why this breed isn't that popular – the reason for that is most likely because it almost became extinct during World War II. There weren't many left during that time, so there weren't many owners to testify how great it really was.
If you're not a Roman gladiator or a farmer, like many of the people reading this article, the Cane Corso can still serve as a great family pet. This pooch is extremely loyal to the family that owns it. For it's big size and tough guy looks, it's actually very affectionate with its human owners and gentle towards the children.
Some of this breed tend to be rather passive, ignoring the rowdy behavior of the other pets. They don't bark that much nor do they show much signs of aggression, unless they are provoked to do so, and that's when it'll play gladiator with the dumb pooch or human that ticked it off.
It can make a fantastic guard dog, but will need the right dog training routines during its younger years and onwards. It does have the tendency to take charge and play “dad” in the family, so you should establish your authority over it as soon as possible before things get out of hand.
As a pup, have it meet the other pets and people in town, that would lessen the odds of it getting rough and wild, and most likely make it a lot more friendly. Feeding it 3 times a day instead of one giant meal helps it with digestion. Proper dog nutrition must be observed, as well as daily exercise.
These are some pointers to keep in mind if ever you decide to adopt a Cane Corso as a house pet.
