The Basenji Dog Doesn't Bark, But Yodels

Tags: , , ,

2008-08-05If your fed up with your neighbor's constant complaints about your dog's non-stop barks, then you probably need to think of better dog obedience lessons. If you really suck at training pets and feel that all hope is lost, don't – what if I told you that there is a dog breed that doesn't bark? You'd be happy now wouldn't you? Good news, there is – it's called the Basenji.

This pooch has traits that make it really unique, or in other words, “special”. Saying goodbye to sleepless nights and angry neighbors is a dream made possible with this breed; it doesn't bark, it “purrs” and “yodels”, which is very pleasant to the ears - pretty cool if you ask me.

Another good thing about the pooch is that it is very hygienic; you'd see it constantly licking its fur, keeping itself clean as if it was a cat. And like a cat, it too is very agile – they can run very fast and maneuver its body with ease, something that not all breeds can do.

Some people claim that they've seen a Basenji jump up and catch a bird. When this canine runs, it does so with grace; they float down terrain as if it were a horse galloping. But where did the amazing Basenji come from? They said it originated from Africa, but there are some rumors saying that there were drawings of it in caves found in Egypt dating 5000 years back.

But anyways, in Africa, they used its skill set for serving as a hunting dog. They would aid the hunters flush out beasts to the open for a clear shot or into a net for live capture. Good eyesight was made useful for spotting game from a distance without warning the unsuspecting victim of their presence.

If it was out of sight, they made use of its good sense of smell to pick up trails and root out the little critters. Knowing all of this is important if ever you want to consider raising it as a family pet. The Basenji may be an extremely intelligent dog, but it does bore easily.

Dog training routines must be kept mixed up, meaning the methods of learning shouldn't be too repetitive. Use your head and think of methods to keep the environment interesting and rewarding – such might include the use of doggy treats, toys, and praises. A newbie to the dog world would most definitely have difficulty in trying to teach it a thing or two, so research on how to go about training will be needed.

Canine housebreaking will be fairly easy though, as well as grooming. Brushing and bathing only when needed will be enough. The Basenji will love playing with the kids (if any) – they are playful by nature and are very affectionate. They get along well with other pets, but not the really small ones such as the rodent family.

An important reminder: put up a fence that is high and sturdy – the Basenji is a master of escape and will escape (leave the property) if it sees an opening.
