Life Is Good With An Akbash Dog

Tags: , , ,

2008-07-23The word Akbash does sound awkward, as if it was a term used by cavemen – but the truth is this dog breed originated from Turkey and has been on this planet for thousands of years. That somewhat explains the primitive name given to it now does it? Anyways, “Akbash” came from the word “akbas”, which is the Turkish translation of the word “white head”.

Why did they call it as such? Well because it usually came in the color white, their head was white too, so they came up with the weird name white head; don't know why but they just did. Turkish farmers bred this pooch as a guardian of their flock – they too had problems with numerous predators hanging around and waiting for the chance to take a shot at the herd, so the need for a sheepdog was inevitable.

I'm not sure how they bred the pooch, but I do know that they had impressive results. The product of whatever they combined or did not combine was a pooch weighing at an average of 100 pounds and standing 30 inches. That was the average stats of some of the pioneers though, but an offspring weighing anywhere from 90 to 130 pounds and standing 28 to 32 inches is to be expected.

So as you can tell, it's a pretty large and made it physically capable of warding off vicious animals. The Akbash dog breed has a protective instinct, taking things that it has been assigned to under careful watch. These attributes are not limited to sheep herding and farm work, but are also useful for making a great home pet.

They make great companions – they love hanging around the humans that own them and can be quite playful. The Akbash dog is brave and loyal; expect it to grow suspicious of strangers, especially those with the intentions to do harm. To this breed, the family becomes part of its herd, and it feels the need to protect its herd at all costs.

This makes it a great guard dog to have around in the house now doesn't it? One thing to keep in mind is that they can be a little too pushy sometimes, so it's best that you establish your authority over it as early as possible. Dog training for this pet is essential, as well as training your kids not to submit to the will of this pooch all the time.

Routines should be kept consistent, fair (not being too harsh or strict, but nice to the pet and rewarding good behavior and obedience), and full of fun. The best way for the Akbash dog to learn is when you have all of its attention on you – minimize the distractions. Dog grooming for this breed needs close attention; its fur is sensitive so therefore a mild soap and shampoo formulated for canine should be used.

Bath only when needed; brushing will be needed often to keep the shine of its coat and minimize shedding. As for dog behavioral problems, have it socialize with other pets and humans constantly. This will greatly improve its social skills, making it get along with the others animals that it may meet and minimize the frequency of it barking.
