The Remarkable Newfoundland Dogs

Tags: , , ,

2008-11-21Have you heard of Nana the famous family dog of the Darling family from James Barrie’s famous children’s book Peter Pan? What about Faithful, Hector, and Lara? They are the famous first dogs of Presidents Ulysses Grant, Rutherford Hayes, and James Buchanan respectively. These pets have one thing in common and that is their breed.

They are known as Newfoundland dogs which are said to have originated from Newfoundland, a province of Canada. It is believed to be a close family of the extinct American Black Wolf. This breed of dog is famous for its life saving, swimming, and excellent sniffing skills. It is also a great watch dog on land and on board the ship.

Its ability to swim has helped the famous French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte from drowning. Thanks to their webbed feet because it made swimming a natural thing to them. Newfoundland dogs belong to the big dog category or better yet the giant category because it reaches up to 28 inches in height and ranges from 120 to 150 pounds in weight.

Together with these measurements is a powerful body with strong neck, shoulders, and forelegs. It is like having a great bear snoozing in the comforts of your living room. A smaller version of the original breed is known as the St. John Newfoundland. Generally it is black in color with a white tuft on its chest.

However its fur color varies from a mix of white, black, and bronze. Newfoundland dogs are excellent buddies because aside from being a great companion for children at home they are the first pick for sea travel a long time ago due to their ability to identify the proximity of land even before the travelers themselves can lay their eyes on the view.

For the people in Newfoundland, having this breed is an excellent choice for them because it is a big help for fishermen by helping them pull their nets full of catch for the day. In fact they considered this breed as their working dog and proclaimed it their official animal emblem.

But they did not stop there because they place a picture of it in their postage stamps. What a great honor for the Newfoundland dogs! As opposite to its massive and intimidating size is its gentle and soft-natured personality. Who would think that this breed would be able to take care of young children? It protects their owner’s baby from harm just like what it would do to its own.

It guards house, ships and even humans. Its amazing character also played a role in the Civil War who fought the confederates but was eventually killed. Even if it was shot in the head, it died a heroically. This Newfoundland was called Major. In the Second World War it helped carry stuffs like supplies and water.

Having this breed is a great catch because it is able to please and satisfy its owner. However on the downside, its huge body needs more food to cope with, its thick fur needs to be groomed regularly so as its owner and master you have to provide for its physical and emotional needs.

Just remember that owning is a Newfoundland is a privilege and as what other owners have said they would never trade their pet for anything.
