The Extraordinary German Shepherd Dog

Tags: , , , ,

2008-12-04The German Shepherd is also known as Deutscher Schäferhund in German which, if translated to English, literally means German Shepherd. The term was coined by Von Stephanitz who believed that dogs should be bred for working. They originated from Germany way back in 1899 and were called shepherds because they were used as guard dogs for sheep.

They are considered as large dog breeds which range from 55 to 65 centimeters or 22 to 26 inches and weighs between 22 and 40 kilograms or 65 to 95 pounds. Their fur color varies from tan and black to red and black. Some rare varieties are colored all white, all black, blue, liver and sable.

If you are planning to adopt one make, sure that you have gathered enough information about this breed whether general or specific. If you are attracted to their intelligent nature, then you have the right choice because they are considered as the world’s third most intelligent dog next to the Border Collie and Poodle.

They have also a great strength which can knock down anyone in just one leap. Their strength together with their intelligence makes them an excellent choice as rescue, guard and working dogs. Beneath their large body lies a gentle personality. German Shepherds are friendly especially with the people they are associated with even to small kids.

They are very loyal and faithful by nature. Training a German Shepherd is easy because it is generally a fast learner. Just about five repetitions and this dog already understand what you are trying to teach it. However its training would be the best if made when it was still a puppy so that it will be registered in its mind that you are its only master.

It has also the characteristic of being obedient however when not properly handled its aggressive dog nature tends to surface. That is why proper training should be conducted to a German Shepherd especially when it is already full grown. This breed usually lives for about 11 to 12 years and although physically well built it has its own common dog ailments.

These ailments to mention a few include hip and elbow dysplasia, bloat and aortic stenosis, which can later on lead to arthritis. Probably the biggest contribution of this breed to humans is their ability to detect death threats such as explosives. They are also a big help during search and rescue operations including narcotics detection and cadaver searching.

Caring for a German Shepherd involves a lot of responsibility and that includes making your fences higher so that it won’t jump over and providing a larger dog care stuffs such as dog bed or shelter, larger bowls and feeders, etc. But the biggest space you need to allot if ever you are going to adopt one is the space in your heart.

Sounds a bit funny but you really have to provide lots of attention for this breed because they are a very useful to society. By taking care of them and by providing a comfortable living is still not enough to return the favors they are doing for humans. But by adopting one would be a great way to start being grateful.
