Dog Breeds: The Canaan Dog

Tags: , , ,

One of the oldest dog breeds existing on this planet is the – if you've read the Catholic Bible, you'll know that Canaan is some ancient place mentioned many times in numerous passages there. Some dog breeds are named after the place they first originated from, such as this pooch; common sense will tell you that naming an animal after an ancient place must mean that it too is ancient (true in some cases). Another fact suggesting its really old age is drawings found in tombs in Israel dating back to 2000 - not the year 2000 which was 8 years ago, but 2000 BC.

Anyways, since there aren't any pictures of this pet coming with this article, I'll give you a little description of it so you can somewhat grasp the image in your mind. They aren't one of those big giant breeds, like many others that have been around for quite some time now; they're actually of medium build, weighing only anywhere from 35 to 55 pounds, and standing 19 to 24 inches (depending on its gender). They have a slender and athletic body, with a look that looks similar to a fox. With that description, you should now have a semi-clear black and white picture of this pet in mind, but if you'd like to get a better one, simply find a picture of it on the net.

The Canaan Dog was used as a back in the old days. It was also needed for animal management (keeping the herd in place and under control), warning the farmers of the presence of any wild beasts posing a threat to the flock, and combat the predators if necessary. Some dog breeds have coats designed to put up with cold and rainy weather, but this pooch's coat was built to withstand the hot deserts of Israel, making it “special” or different from the others. The Israelites also chose this canine for the job because of its “trainability” - even though it's one of the “primitive types”, they are highly intelligent and learn relatively fast.

As time passed, it was able to land more advanced jobs, such as a hunting dog for hunters, or looking for lost people. This is because it has a great sense of smell, which was also utilized for detecting mines planted by enemy soldiers or insane activists. It could also play messenger boy for the military and other organizations or people. To date, the Canaan Dog now makes a pretty good house pets for families. One thing to remember is that it has the tendency to be stubborn and bossy, so behavioral lessons and proper will most definitely be needed.

Have to mingle with other animals, pets, and humans so that it'll improve its social skills. They say getting this pooch will require an owner with experience in handling different dog breeds, which is true and would be recommended for a more compatible relationship between the two parties. But if you're a first time owner and still are interested, then I suggest you do some research and gain knowledge about responsible pet ownership.
