The Good And Bad Of The Catahoula Leopard Dog

Tags: , , ,

2008-08-28Everyone and everything has a good and bad side, or at least two features that contrast. Take the fictional character Dr. Jeckle for example: before he got into the freak accident or got high on the drugs or whatever he was using, he was a normal person. But after the freak accident or the drugs, or whatever it was, he turned into something completely different – a monster.

That example was rather exaggerated, so a more realistic one would be Yin and Yang. The law goes something like “where there's good, there has to bad in order to maintain balance, or all hell will let loose” - or something else of similarity. Anyways, enough with the ridiculous examples, my point is that the Catahoula Leopard Dog breed has both good and bad attributes in it.

But I'm happy to say that it has more positive than negative; want to know what they are? Look here: a “plus” would be that the Catahoula Leopard Dog is considered to be one of the most versatile working dogs to date. They're very good at all kinds of tasks, such as working as a herder of sheep.

Rounding them up, keeping them in place, and chasing off predators was its basic standard operating procedure; and it did it well. What the farmers loved about it was it's ability to learn very fast – the intelligent dog breed didn't need much repetition of any of the tricks taught thanks to its good memory.

What else, you ask, is the Catahoula Leopard Dog good at? Well another field which the pooch specialized in is hunting wild game. The hunting dog, standing 20 to 26 inches and weighing 55 to 80 pounds, proved to be very agile and possess acute senses. Because its build was slender and well-balanced, the pooch was ideal for all kinds of hunting scenarios.

So, basically, you now know all the good that it has, but I said that it does have bad “attributes” in it – what are they? Do you even wanna know what they are? If you do, read the following: the Catahoula Leopard Dog is without doubt intelligent, but it does have the tendency to become very stubborn.

Not giving this breed the proper canine obedience lessons from an early age can cause it to become real hard-headed. There's a need for you to establish your superiority over it as a pup; so giving some thought to that, how will a dog “submit” itself to another? The answer, in some cases, would be through a dog fight (the winner becomes king, loser becomes bitch) – so does this mean that the two of you should square off? Of course not, at that age you'd have an unfair advantage and beat the crap out of it.

Not only that, it just doesn't work – you see, negative reinforcement only makes things worse, like lead to the development of numerous behavioral problems. So the best way to go about it is with the use of positive reinforcement methods. Lastly, owning a Catahoula Leopard Dog means that you'll have to learn the basics on canine raising and training.

This is a breed that isn't well-suited for amateurs, especially for pet owners those with no knowledge about dogs whatsoever.
