Music For Canine Anxiety

2009-07-03 Summer is well upon us once again! To me, it’s quite astounding how time flies. In the blur of the past three days, I was thinking of the right topic to write about for the weekend and when I checked the calendar, it hit me! Saturday is the 4th of July, a big day for the people of America. I bet the fireworks were set to fill the air with bright lights and loud noises. I guess you’ve already figured out how you’re going to spend it with Fido. If you’re planning to take him out to the fireworks display, make sure he will not be terrified with light flashes and loud noises.

Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks

2009-07-02 I guess you may say I’m a real fan of old dogs. I spent much of my youth with my grandfather who had owned 7 dogs in his lifetime, most of which died of old age. As a dog trainer, conducting training for old dogs had been quite a challenge for me. But who says you cannot teach an old dog new tricks? I have heard this adage about age and learning for countless times but I believe it was supposed to be interpreted less literally. Training old dogs can be a bit challenging and they may not be able to learn as quickly as the younger ones, but with time and patience, they can be taught to do just anything that a puppy can.

How Dog Nail Grooming Prevents Bone Damage

2009-07-01 In my previous articles, I mentioned about dog arthritis and its accompanying symptoms. At one time, I also talked about false canine pregnancy symptoms which canine owners often get mistaken for signs of true canine pregnancy. Indeed there is wisdom in looking into your dog’s condition and understanding signs that often signal underlying serious diseases. On the other hand, misunderstanding signs can lead you to a wrong diagnosis which could create even more problem. It happened to one of my friends who owned a Basset named Mozart, who showed symptoms she thought were those of arthritis. She said he suddenly started walking awkwardly with a gesture of pain in every cautious step.

Understanding Dog Food Label

2009-06-30 In the United States, dogs live up to an average lifespan of 11 years. But do you know that canines can stay alive for more than twice this age? According to some veterinary scientists, dogs can live up to 27 years! Now how would you like to be with your beloved friend that long? Actually, there is no big secret behind keeping your pet alive for over 20 years. There is just something that you probably don’t know as regards your pet’s lifestyle, particularly its diet. Dogs need at least 5 things to stay healthy and live long. These are: love, exercise, shelter, water, and food.

What Drives Your Dog's Stinky Habit?

2009-06-29 One of my favorite diversions during my private moments is reading books. I have dozens of volumes in my mini-library at my house and the ones that I really love to read are, guess what, stories about dogs! It’s kind of silly but I have loved reading dog stories for young children since when I was only 11 years old. All my friends know that and they would often jokingly ask me to share some dog stories every time we got together. About four weeks ago, I received a birthday gift from Kelly, my close college friend. When I opened the box, I was surprised to find what she got for me.

Getting Your Dog Into Show Business

2009-06-26 All of us love to look at our pets and often tell ourselves how talented and cute they are. But have you ever thought of seeing your dog on TV? You have probably seen hundreds of dogs featured on television shows or dog TV commercials and wished one of them were yours. Or perhaps you have been watching an anti-flea shampoo commercial lately where a pug scratches off his fleas and you have been thinking, “ Crap, my pet does that all day long for free”. Well’ I would say your pet can probably even scratch better. But, do you know what the difference is? That pug doesn’t have a single flea at all, and he’s probably been trained to scratch himself while following commands from off the camera! And he’s earning money out of it.

Will Your Dog Go To Heaven?

2009-06-25 How would you feel if your pet dies? Surely, losing a dog can be a traumatic experience. It is very much like losing a best friend or a loved one you have been with for 10 years or longer. Unfortunately, not many people understand it. Yet, most of us know many people who have cried over the death of a pet. If you have suffered losing a dog, you most likely understand how difficult it can be especially if it was a sudden one. After having lived with dogs for almost 75 years, my grandfather wrote something in his journal, something that I have given some serious reflection.

Can Dogs Get Swine Flu?

2009-06-24 Since the outbreak of swine flu earlier this year, humans considered it as one of the biggest scare to our health until now. Concerned citizens and institutions have been providing information on how to protect humans from this virulent disease. Detailed information on how to protect individuals and families from H1N1 virus infection is readily available. Well, what about my pets? Can dogs get swine flu? I have been asked this question a lot of times in the past months and I decided to write something about it for the benefit of those who are still looking for answers. The issue of swine flu in dogs has been posing several questions in the minds of anxious dogs owners all over the world.

Good Names Make Better Dogs

2009-06-23 A couple of weeks ago, I received a call from my cousin in Los Angeles. She told me of an embarrassing experience she had with her little brother and his pet while they were at the park. She got her 11-year old brother a new Pug a day before that and told him to name it. While they were walking at the park, the animal tried to run away so the little boy shouted at him. She was shocked at how people reacted! She turned and saw everyone looking at her with an insulted look on their faces. She took the dog and her brother and left the place feeling lower than a squashed snake! Now, you may be wondering what’s in that dog’s name that made the people react as if they got offended by a debasing church minister’s sermon.

The Amazing Polish Tatra Sheepdog

2009-06-19 Since I started dog training some years ago, my life has been full of dogs; and training dogs is making my life full-on until now. Aside from my great companion, Reagan, I get to interact with dozens of different canine breeds every week, most of which are taken to me for dog training advice. In my private moments, I often thought of how my life would have been without the companionship of these amazing creatures. Even when I am not with Reagan or other dogs, I have them on my mind. I train them, write about them, answer questions about them, and continuously learn about them.
